The London North Rotary Club has a small membership with some 22 members, more than made up by the enthusiasm and community spirit of the women and men that comprise this closely knit group.
We are looking to add to our membership so that we can do even more in our community and throughout the world. London Rotary Clubs and the Dictionary Project
Three years ago, Sue Storie, of the Hyde Park Rotary Club began a humble Literary Project providing “Dictionaries” to the Grade 3 students in 2 schools in her area of London. She learned about the Dictionaries in the USA through “the Dictionary Project” intended to improve literacy amongst less fortunate students in the USA, and wisely appreciated that our own Canadian Students could benefit as well. Since then, it has built into an Annual Project involving most of the Grade 3 classes in the Public and Catholic Schools in the Thames Valley School District and involves all the London and area Rotary Clubs. The ESL and Special Classes are also provided, as well as ESL at the Adult level. During 2011 9 Rotary Clubs were involved handing out 4000+ dictionaries to 100 schools – a gift to every child to keep and use on a daily basis, hoping to improve their Literacy! Rotary's $200 Million Challenge....Very Good News
The Rotary Foundation has just announced that on January 17, 2012, Rotary members have surpassed their $200 million target with contributions now totaling $202.6.
We must remember, however, that this achievement is just one more milestone in our journey to eradicate polio. Most importantly, our ultimate goal is the certification of the eradication of polio. Rotarians are continuing to raise funds for the challenge, which officially concludes on June 30, 2012.
Gates Foundation has awarded The Rotary Foundation an additional US$50 million grant on top of its original $355 million grant for polio eradication. The new $50 million grant from the Gates Foundation is not a challenge grant; it results from Rotary’s early achievement of the $200 million milestone and of the need for continued funding support for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
